GREEN CARD AS A SPECIAL IMMIGRANT

The Special Immigrant Visa is an immigration program that grants permanent residence to people who aided the U.S. government abroad.

Religious Worker

You may qualify for a green card as a member of a religious denomination coming to the US to work for a nonprofit religious organization.

Special Immigrant Juvenile

If you are a juvenile who needs the protection of a juvenile court because you have been abused, abandoned, or neglected by a parent.

Afghanistan or Iraq National

This category includes the following:

  • You were employed by the U.S. government as an Afghan or Iraqi translator or interpreter.

  • You were an Iraqi, employed by the U.S. government in Iraq on or after March 20, 2003, for at least one year.

  • Were an Afghan employed by the U.S. government for International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

 International Broadcaster

This category includes only those immigrants that are coming to the U.S. to work as a member of the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM) or a USAGM grantee. 

GREEN CARD THROUGH ASYLEE STATUS

You may be eligible to apply as an:

  • Asylee if you were granted asylum status at least 1 year ago.

  • Refugee if you were admitted as a refugee at least 1 year ago.

GREEN CARD FOR HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND CRIME VICTIMS

You may be eligible to apply as a:

  • Human trafficking victim if you currently have a T non immigrant visa.

  • Crime victim if you currently have a U non immigrant visa

GREEN CARD FOR VICTIMS OF ABUSE

VAWA (Violence Against Woman Act) Self-Petitioner-Victim of Battery or Extreme Cruelty

If you are:

  • The abused spouse of a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident

  • The abused child of (unmarried under 21) of a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.

  • The abused parent of a U.S. citizen.

Special Immigrant Juvenile

If you are a child who has been abused, abandoned, or neglected by your parent or you have SIJ status. 

These are some of the most common green card eligibility criteria.  There are certain other categories under which an applicant can qualify for a green card but the most common ones are listed above.
